Recalibrating : A Shift in my Internal Dialogue

Recalibrating.

My new favourite word.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as:

: to make small changes to an instrument so that it measures accurately

: to change the way you do or think about something

It’s resetting.

Taking a moment to recognise what it is you do want.  And also taking a moment to recognise what it is you don’t want.

The 2-year plan, the 5-year plan, the 10-year plan.   My career plan.  Tools that had the sole purpose to create focus and to then be broken down into more actionable goals and tasks.  And it makes sense.

Provided that you know what it is or where it is you want to be.

With career changes happening more and more regularly in the workplace, what does this actually look like for professionals today?

Think back to when you first started out in your career.  Is your current role what you had planned for?  I know for me I had no idea that I would be living in Canada.

And I am starting to realise that this doesn’t matter as much as the new experiences I want to create in my life.

This line of thought came about this morning as I was listening to a podcast on ApplePodcasts, called Women Rule and Piera Gelardi was the interview subject.

Piera Gelerdi is one of the co-founders of Refinery29.  A website that has changed and is constantly changing the way women are portrayed in the media.  Bringing diversity into mainstream media and providing a platform in which women are able to see themselves reflected in our world.

When asked, ‘Where do you want to go from here?’, she states, ‘As a person I don’t have a long term plan…I experience things and I respond to things…I always thought I was doing something wrong, I didn’t have that 10 year plan…it’s more about the values and the types of experiences that I want to be having.’

Thiwas like a lightbulb moment for me!

I started asking myself these questions.

What is your 10 year plan?  Do these goals resonate with what you actually want?  Or is it something you have been told that you should do?  Does it feel good when you read it outloud?

How do you want your life to look?

Where do you want to live?

What do you want to see?

Is there a way in which you want to be of service to others?

What do you want to experience in your life that you have yet to?

Recalibrating is best done outside under a blue sky! And at the beach!

I have been incredibly lucky that I have had opportunities to travel the world, to work in creative spaces and to meet and work with some incredibly talented people.  People that live in far-flung places on this earth.

And even though I have accomplished a lot, there are still some experiences that I want to live into.

So I’ve switched my internal vocabulary from ‘job hunting’ to ‘experience seeking’.

This small shift has opened my mind to a lot of opportunities that I previously would never have considered and I don’t feel as limited as I once did.

I now ask myself :

Is this something that you have already experienced?  And did I enjoy it enough to want to experience it again?

Is this city somewhere I want to be?

What else do I want to see?

And I have so much gratitude for having these options as I know not everyone does.  And that if I didn’t leverage this, then it would be a waste and maybe, just maybe I could inspire another to see opportunities in this same way.

I’d love to hear about how you look at job-hunting / career shifting / experience seeking / life living!  Feel free to comment below or send me an email via the contact page
